Estonian Concrete Building of the Year is the building of Estonian Academy of Security Sciences

Today, 11th of March the winner of the “Concrete Building of the Year Awards 2019” was announced. Estonian Academy of Security Services won the prize that has been given out for 20 years.

The jury’s comment: “It is not about the exposed smooth concrete mold surface – the architect has also been very creative, skilfully utilizing the effects of concrete elements. Construction of high slanting walls (at 5 and 10 degree angles) of prestressed hollow core panels commonly used in intermediate ceilings. The aesthetically pure concrete shell of the building forms a significantly strong shield that conceals a humane and soft content. ”

”A state-of-the-art, architecturally advanced, well-functioning educational and research facility that is energy efficient and economically sustainable. Easily achieved interesting architecture,” said Chairman of the Jury, Aadu Kana, about this year’s winner.

Special Award for Concrete Works in the reconstruction of the Gas Tower of the Culture Boiler.

Concrete works – Evocon Grupp OÜ.

The jury’s comment: “For the gentle intervention in giving new content to an old building. The collision of the old and the new is well done. For impeccable concrete work in difficult conditions.”

Chairman of the jury Aadu Kana: “A genuine, clean, honest solution. A good example of what concrete can do.”

Special Award for the Client – Vahtra Big Farm.

Client – Weiss OÜ. Award given for the client for a well thought-out goal and purposeful activity.

The jury’s comment: “Concrete has been chosen for the right place here – constructionally it lasts. In the newly independent Estonia, there is no livestock building built that is fully made of reinforced concrete load-bearing structures.”

Chairman of the jury Aadu Kana: “Weiss OÜ, a farm in Pärnu County, has been rebuilding a number of barns for 25 years and has the experience that gases from animal husbandry – heat and methane – to cause livestock rotting and rusting of iron posts. So it was decided to build a concrete barn. At the peak of concrete use is the building’s milking parlor, with its high-bridged (24x24m) ceiling made of post-tensioned monolithic concrete. ”

Special Award of Ehitusuudised.ee (Äripäev) was given to the owner of Tartu Vikerkaare 15 – R.E.R. Ehitus OÜ, main extractor and concrete contractor.

The jury’s comment: „It’s a good example of how a new concrete building has been united with the old concrete buildings. Here we can see concrete constructions of the prewar period of the Republic of Estonia, the reinforced concrete frames of the industrial and administrative buildings from the Soviet period and our contemporary building. Many of the concrete surfaces from different periods are left without covering finishing.”

The jury’s chairman Aadu Kana: „One of our best examples of Estonian industrial architecture and a mixture of rooms from different eras has been united into a dignified, yet youthful entity. The concrete here proves to be a remarkable example of a truly durable material,” he added.

Special Award for outstanding idea and implementation – Architectonics in Pöörise residential district in Tallinn.
Client: – TTP AS,
Design: – Nord Projekt AS: Raiko Reinson and Veiko Zovo,
Constructor – PR Betoon OÜ.

The jury’s comment: „Sculptural structure in the heart of a new residential district reveals the engineers’ skills to shape concrete into a slim and artistic form. The thin cross section has only been achieved through excellent knowledge of concrete as a building material.”

The jury’s chairman Aadu Kana added: “We are proud of this challenging tridimensional construction.”

Special award for Architecture – architect Martin Aunin – Roseni 9/11 hotel-apartment and office building – for innovative use of concrete and display of the material.

The jury’s comment: „Both on the facade of the building and in the interior red concrete dominates. Red concrete has been used in a variety of ways – in fine-cut frames with monolithic concrete casting, as complex or deep patterned facade and balcony border elements and as large-format paving slabs around the house. The red prefabricated wall elements are both outer shell elements and three-layer sandwich elements. The West Facade has a red concrete balcony system. The semi-circular main staircase in the hotel lobby is clean red concrete.”

An original building with contemporary architecture that creates new connections in its environment and elegantly highlights the advantages of concrete as a modern structural material.

The jury’s comment: ‘This building possesses ambitious architecture that is rooted in concrete and is composed of a grand dialogue between concrete, steel and glass.’

The jury’s chairman, Aadu Kana, said: ‘The quality of the concrete work is also excellent – and on what a scale! All the way to the rooms at the back, the ‘dark’ storage facilities, and the hand-polished concrete stairs, each and every person working on the construction of this building has done an outstanding job. It stands as a true homage to the Estonian people!’

Special Award for Architecture – Narva beach house

Arhitektuuribüroo JVR OÜ – Kalle Vellevoog, Andrus Andrejev, & Martin Prommik

The jury’s comment was: ‘The architects have made sure that this concrete building merges into the landscape and doesn’t seem to be too dominating, while still guaranteeing active usability on different levels. A cast concrete building with complicated configurations.’

The two different forge patterns, combined with smooth unprocessed surfaces, accentuate playfulness.’

The jury’s chairman, Aadu Kana, said: ‘E-Betoonelement used titanium dioxide to produce the details on the building’s façade. The aim of the architects was to achieve a light, charming, and natural-looking concrete surface.’

Special Award for Cooperation between the Contractor, Architect, and Manufacturer of the Concrete ElementLääne-Virumaa villa

Contractor: private individual

Architects: Arhitektibüroo Emil Urbel OÜ (Emil Urbel, Aleksandr Zverev)

Estonian Concrete Building of the Year is Ihaste Bridge

Press Release
17.03.2016

On the Concrete Day in Tallinn Creative Hub, the Estonian Concrete Association announced the winners of Concrete Building of the Year 2015.

Estonian Concrete Building of the Year 2015 – Ihaste Bridge in Tartu. The main prize of the contest – Ehituse ja Tarkvara Inseneribüroo OÜ (Juhan Idnurm ja Siim Idnurm).

– The contractor prize – Tartu City Government;

– The construction works prize – AS TREF;

– The concrete works prize – AS K-Most;

– The concrete prize – AS Rudus;

– The formwork prize – Doka Eesti OÜ.

For taking into account the new technology, the high-quality engineering solutions, the various considerations to protect the nature and the pleasant external solution during the whole process of bridge construction.

The jury said: „What makes the bridge so special is the fact that it is both vertically and horizontally located on a curve which is a big challenge for both the designer and the constructor. The concrete architectural warps and cambers together with belvederes and staircases demonstrate vividly the structural advantages of concrete as a construction material. ”

During the construction of Ihaste Bridge’s 90 m wide main span, for the first time in the Baltics the DOKA mobile suspended formwork system was used.

The chairman of the jury Aadu Kana said: „No similar facilities have been previously built in the Baltic States where such an amount of cantilever casting has been used. This technology enables effective and economic construction of the bridge’s main span over the river Emajõgi, not to mention the effort to reduce the construction strain on the environment and on the Natura nature conservation areas located on both sides of the bridge.”

Juhan Idnurm and Siim Idnurm have also won the main prize of the Concrete Building of the Year in 2007 for the Puurmani arch bridge.

Special prize for the concrete innovation – KODA, Kodasema OÜ.

An excellent example of a social initiative, when right people (professionals) get together in order to create something marvellous.

The jury said: „Koda impressed us as a small but a good attempt to simplify the construction of dwellings and to offer new, modern and widely available solutions to housing problems. Koda shows that concrete construction doesn’t necessarily have to be enormous and static. Concrete can successfully be used in combination with other materials in the construction of such a small structure.”

Special prize for the contractor: Anders Anderson – private house in Tabasalu, Harku County, Harjumaa.

For the commitment, purpose and courage to use concrete in construction.

The chairman of the jury Aadu Kana: “Each side of this house impresses you with a completely new aspect. If you look at the house standing on the street, you think it is a castle, a fort or a medieval fortification, but if you stand in the back yard, you see a home with spacious glass surfaces.

An exceptionally well-done complex casting. Concrete has successfully been exhibited both in the exterior and in the interior. ”

Special prize of the magazine “Ehitaja” – Primekss OÜ: the high-quality concrete floors and loading areas of Maxima logistics centre.

The competition “Estonian Concrete Construction of the Year” organized for the sixteenth time this year was brought to life to introduce to the public the wide areas of application of concrete and to acknowledge the people who have used a domestic building material – the versatile and easy-to-shape concrete – to implement their ideas.

14 works were submitted to this year’s competition. The competition was open to the concrete buildings and the structures and procedures used in them that were delivered to the ordering parties in the course of 2015.

The jury’s comments: “An aesthetically enjoyable sports hall with complex engineering, offering multiple areas of exploitation and distinguishing from other Nordic ice halls by greater consideration for design.”

Aadu Kana, Chairman of the jury: “We were delighted about the diverse use of concrete and the very high quality of the concrete works. The union of concrete and wood is especially well executed in this building.”

Special prize for architecture – Architectural bureau Studio-3 OÜ,

The building of the Embassy of the Republic of Estonia, Beijing, China.

For the high level of work architecturally and excellent exhibition of concrete in the exterior as well as interior.

The jury’s comments: “The architects of the building envisaged even more striking and imposing use of concrete, but the local builders did not fully execute their wishes. The building itself is of monolithic concrete and the external walls were supposed to be made of white monolithic concrete as well, but were eventually built of fibre reinforced concrete elements. There was an international competition held for the architectural solution and the result speaks for itself.”

Special prize for architecture and the builder – Parking building in Ülemiste City, Valukoja 4C, in Tallinn.

Design: Novarc Group AS, Ilmar Klammer;

Builder: Nordecon Betoon OÜ.

For the skilful renovation of a historic building; for the pleasant and successful combining of “the new and old” structurally, aesthetically and functionally.

For preparedness for cooperation, thinking along, for the well-considered and high-quality concrete work.

The jury’s comments: “A concrete parking building has been cast into a brick factory building from the 1950s, the brick surfaces have been covered with concrete on the inside. The architect’s work must be acknowledged for the fact that a new building – a parking building in conformity with standards – was built inside the old contours. The architect has done his best and the builders of Nordecon provided very high-quality work.”

Special prize for the ordering party: Lauri Tuulberg – apartment at Kosemetsa 11 in Tallinn.

For bold and innovative use of concrete in the interior design of an apartment block apartment.

Aadu Kana, Chairman of the jury: “While concrete does not really feature in the general appearance of the three apartment buildings in Kosemetsa Road, then this apartment is an extremely concrete-friendly piece of art. The owner of the apartment can be awarded the title of a “real friend of concrete”: the walls of the apartment are of cast concrete and the islands in the kitchen and in the sauna, lights in various rooms, etc. are also made of concrete.”

Special prize of the magazine “Ehitaja” – TMB Element OÜ: The high-quality concrete elements of the building of the Physicum of the University of Tartu.

The competition “Concrete Construction of the Year” organized for the fifteenth time this year was brought to life to introduce to the public the wide areas of application of concrete and to acknowledge the people who have used a domestic building material – the versatile and easy-to-shape concrete – to implement their ideas.

13 works were submitted to this year’s competition. The competition was open to the concrete buildings and the structures and procedures used in them that were delivered to the ordering parties in the course of 2014.

The jury of the competition “Concrete Construction of the Year 2014” included representatives of various construction associations of Estonia: Johannes Pello from the Estonian Concrete Association, Kalle Vellevoog from the Estonian Association of Architects, Indrek Peterson from the Estonian Association of Construction Entrepreneurs, Heiki Meos from the Estonian Association of Civil Engineers, Enno Rebane from the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia, Andres Saar from the Estonian Association of Architectural and Consulting Engineering Companies, Chairman of the jury Aadu Kana, as well as representatives of construction journalists – Eva Kiisler from the magazine “Ehitaja” and Finnish architect Maritta Koivisto from the magazine “Betoni”.

The Estonian Concrete Association is a union promoting the use of concrete as a domestic construction material, which incorporates 48 companies, organisations and private persons.

The Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia is an association of the undertakings involved in production and sales of construction materials, which incorporates 63 members.
