“The high participation in Estonia’s oldest continuously running construction competition continues to demonstrate the diverse advantages of concrete, the most widely used building material,” said Imre Leetma, Chairman of the Estonian Concrete Association. “Each year, numerous buildings and structures are completed in Estonia where concrete plays a central role. We eagerly await the most outstanding projects to participate in our anniversary competition,” added Leetma.

Submissions for the concrete building competition can include:

  • Constructions – buildings and structures handed over during the year 2024;
  • Constructions not yet previously submitted to the competition;
  • Designs and procedures may be entered as well.

The winning project or procedure will be one where the work of companies registered in Estonia and concrete materials supplied from Estonia have played a significant role. When selecting the winner, the jury will consider the professionalism, level of difficulty, quality, and innovation involved in the design and construction of the project. The main prize will be awarded to the author of the winning idea. Recognition will also be given to the client, designer, builder, formwork supplier, concrete product manufacturer, and concrete supplier of the winning project.

Concrete Book – an overview of the 21st century Estonian concrete architecture and construction

An overview book of the 21st century Estonian concrete construction, “Concrete Book – Concrete Buildings in the 21st Century Estonia”, has been published commissioned by the Estonian Concrete Association and the Association of Construction Material Producers of Estonia.

The richly illustrated book with texts in Estonian, English, and Russian, gives an overview of the contemporary Estonian concrete architecture and construction on the basis of the winning works of the Concrete Building of the Year contest, the oldest construction contest in Estonia.

The book contains numerous interviews with Estonian architects, constructors, managers of construction and concrete companies, as well as overview articles on the history of Estonian concrete architecture (by Karin Paulus) and the history of the Concrete Building of the Year contest (by Eva Kiisler).

“When we think about our living environment, the contemporary country and society are unthinkable without concrete and artificial stone,” the chairman of the Estonian Concrete Association Imre Leetma says in the book’s preface. “Everyone can ponder, browsing through this book, whether these winners reflect the environment around us on a broader scale. Are these buildings, or at least some of them becoming landmarks? Imprints in stone of their own time.”

The jury’s comment: “It is a building where concrete has been used both delicately and professionally. The building blends perfectly into the surrounding landscape, creating a complete living environment. On the exterior, we see a black wooden board surface in a playful dialogue with white concrete. Both materials have a similar surface profile. Concrete is at the forefront indoors, while at the same time combining all the different materials into one. The solutions used for floor and wall communications made it possible to create and highlight clean concrete surfaces. Due to its neutral colour and rough nature, concrete beautifully emphasizes other materials as well.”

The chairman of the jury, Aadu Kana, added: “Concrete, wood, steel, and glass as main materials create an elegant whole. Charming and thoughtful details, careful construction, and a respectful attitude towards the material and the environment stand out.”

Special award: the joint study and accommodation building of the Narva Study Centre of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences and the University of Tartu Narva College.

Constructor – Nordecon AS.

The jury’s comment: “For the construction of a functionally versatile and socially sensitive building, where concrete not only plays a supporting role but is also aesthetically and architecturally influential. The result is a robust and well-thought-out building that can establish itself in an existing urban environment. The importance of concrete is especially evident in load-bearing and technically demanding structures.”

The chairman of the jury, Aadu Kana: “High-quality concrete surfaces give the public spaces of the building a clear and uniform look and harmonize in style with the wooden constructions of the residential floors.”

Special award: apartment building at Toom-Kuninga 15, Tallinn.

Client: Metro Capital OÜ

Concrete elements: E-Betoonelement OÜ.

The jury’s comment: “For a bold and unique facade solution, where tastefully versatile concrete elements of the facade support the well-thought-out volumetric solution of the buildings.”

The chairman of the jury, Aadu Kana: “We recognize the responsible production of high-quality concrete elements with many imaginative variations. The extensive delivery of elements was carried out as a complex logistical operation, in cooperation with 8 factories from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.”

Special award: reconstruction of the Narva Castle convent house.

The first Environmental Product Declarations in the Estonian precast concrete industry

OÜ TMB Element

Press release

29.10.2020

The first Environmental Product Declarations in the Estonian precast concrete industry

OÜ TMB Element, the leading manufacturer of concrete elements in Estonia, is the first Estonian company to implement international Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its products – precast concrete elements. These are the first EPDs in Estonia issued for products of an Estonian company.

Environmental Product Declarations are used in green certificates and building life cycle assessments (LCAs). In construction projects, where a life cycle assessment of a building is mandatory, there are already situations, especially in Scandinavian countries, where building material producers cannot participate in the procurement without an EPD.

The method has been used in several countries for many years already, and several European countries have announced that it will be mandatory in the near future – in Norway and Sweden in 2022 and in Finland in 2024.

“With the implementation of Environmental Product Declarations, we will start measuring the CO2 footprint of our products and will also be able to start consciously reducing our carbon footprint,” said Urmas Paas, the technology and quality manager of OÜ TMB Element. “On the other hand, it will allow us to become more open and competitive in our export markets, especially in several of our neighboring countries, where the use of EPDs is becoming mandatory in the coming years,” Paas added.

“Product life cycle assessment is a standards-based (ISO 14040) analysis that assesses the environmental impacts of a product or service,” said LCA expert Anni Oviir. “The results of a product life cycle assessment are numerical, so different products are comparable with each other as long as they are assessed on the same basis.”

“The Environmental Product Declaration helps the user of the construction product to make more environmentally conscious choices by providing standardized and objective information on the environmental impacts of concrete elements,” said Kätlin Rahuelu, the environment and work safety specialist of OÜ TMB Element. “The purpose of the declaration is to provide transparent information on the environmental impact of a product throughout its whole life cycle, in accordance with international standards. The reliability of the data is guaranteed by an independent confirmation from a third party verifier,” Rahuelu added.

Anni Oviir: “A life cycle analysis of a construction product becomes an EPD after the results of the analysis are published on the platform of a qualified issuer and previously verified by an independent third party verifier, to make sure that the entire analysis is prepared correctly, according to the necessary standards.”

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a life cycle assessment, a voluntary and standardized way to reliably provide relevant, verified and comparable data on the environmental footprint of a manufactured product or family of products. The calculation covers the full environmental life cycle of the construction product, in addition to greenhouse gas emissions, it also provides other indicators affecting the environment, such as product recovery potential, use of fossil fuels, eutrophication and acidification potentials. All hazardous materials contained in a product must also be included in the EPD. Hazardous waste from production or demolition are calculated from indicators. The environmental impacts reflected in the EPD are presented in easily comparable product units, such as cubic meters or tonnes.

The Environmental Product Declarations of OÜ TMB Element’s products can be viewed on the website of the issuer of the EPDs, RTS EPD (Finland): https://cer.rts.fi/en/
